From MBJ Airport to Your Hotel: Shuttle, Transfer or Taxi

Sangster International – MBJ – sits about ten minutes from the Montego Bay hotel strip and about ninety minutes from Negril. Those two numbers are the whole decision, and most of the confusion about airport transport here comes from people reading advice written for the other one.

The cheap answer, and it is genuinely the popular one

The MBJ airport shuttle bus to hotels is €9.67, listed at 15 minutes, with 4.5 stars from 650 reviews. That is the most-reviewed activity of any kind in our entire Montego Bay inventory — more than every waterfall, catamaran and day trip. Its own listing says the desk is inside the airport and includes air-conditioned transport, a professional driver and local taxes, with an optional VIP lounge and fast-track added on. The stated average wait is about 25 minutes for shared transport and no more than 10 minutes for private.

That wait is the trade. Shared means the vehicle leaves when it is reasonably full, and then makes several hotel stops. If you are the last drop of five, fifteen minutes becomes an hour.

If your hotel is one of the RIU properties, there is a direct transfer to RIU Montego Bay, RIU Reggae and RIU Palace at €8.79 – the cheapest thing on this entire site, level with one other transfer that has no reviews at all – 4.9 stars from 25 reviews, 10 minutes.

For a private car to a Montego Bay address, private transfer to and from Sangster Airport is €15.10, 15 minutes, 4 stars from 16. Six euros more than the shuttle for a vehicle that leaves when you do, which for two or more people arriving late is an easy decision.

Taxis: two companies, one desk

Only JUTA and JCAL are authorised to pick up at the airport, and they share a single Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the customs exit. Fares are zone-based rather than metered, and the airport’s own taxi page puts a Montego Bay hotel at about US$30 per vehicle, with Ocho Rios around US$80 and Negril around US$130 – treat those as the order of magnitude rather than a quoted rate, agree the fare before you get in, and have US dollars in cash.

Anyone approaching you inside the terminal or in the car park who is not at that desk is not the authorised service. This is not a safety warning so much as a pricing one: the desk has fixed zones, and a private arrangement does not.

If you are staying in Negril, the arithmetic inverts

Ninety minutes of road turns a €9.67 problem into a €90 problem. MBJ airport to Negril private transfer is €93.73, 1 hour, with 4.9 stars from 40 reviews – the best rating among the transfers we list with more than a handful of reviews, matched only by the €8.79 RIU transfer above. Ten others show a flat 5.0, but none on more than four reviews. Airport transportation to Negril is €87.87 at 4.7 stars from 62 and is listed at 1 hour 30. Both of those listings describe a private car, and both prices are per vehicle — up to three passengers on the first, up to four on the second — while the €9.67 shuttle is per person.

Note what that means: the cheaper of the two takes one more passenger and is listed half an hour longer, for a saving of about six euros. Both are priced per vehicle, so for two people the one-hour transfer is worth the difference; for four, the €87.87 listing is the only one of the two that seats you at all. This is one of the few places on this site where the arithmetic depends on how many of you there are rather than on the price.

Coming home: Club Mobay

Departure out of MBJ in high season is a queue. Club Mobay’s VIP departure lounge is €32.95 for 1.5 hours, 4.6 stars from 53 reviews, and includes expedited processing along with the lounge. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on your flight time; on a quiet morning it is thirty euros for a nicer chair.

Do you need a hire car?

For most people staying at a Montego Bay resort, no. The airport is ten minutes away, the tours pick up from hotels, and the beaches you would drive to are the ones the tours already go to. A car spends the week in a car park.

It changes if you are staying a week or more, if you are self-catering away from the strip, or if you want the north coast at your own pace rather than on an eight-hour minibus itinerary — the whole Dunn’s River Falls day exists because somebody else is driving.

Three things to know before you decide. Jamaica drives on the left. Jamaica’s tourist board states that clients must be at least 25 years old to rent a vehicle, and individual companies set their own rules on top of that, so check the one you book. And if your licence is not in English or carries no photograph, you will want an International Driving Permit alongside the original — the permit is a translation, not a substitute.

Excess, deposit and what the desk adds at the counter is a longer subject and deserves its own article rather than a paragraph; nothing here is a quote.
