Blue Hole and Secret Falls: The Waterfalls Behind Ocho Rios

There is a tour in our inventory called “Blue Hole, Secret Falls, and Dunn’s River Falls Combo Day-Trip”. It reads like three destinations. It is two.

Blue Hole, Secret Falls, Irie Blue Hole, Cool Blue Hole – they are trade names for the same site in the hills above Ocho Rios, whose formal name on a map is Island Gully Falls. Its own ticket page calls it “the real Blue Hole” and “the authentic Blue Hole experience”, which tells you how crowded the naming has got. Knowing this saves you from booking the same waterfall twice on consecutive days, which people do.

What the place actually is

A chain of limestone pools stepping down a gully, filled with the flat blue-green water that gives the site its name. There are small falls between the pools, a rope swing, a cave to pass through, and jumping ledges at several heights.

It is not a managed park in the way Dunn’s River is. There is no turnstile operation, no lockers-and-gift-shop infrastructure, no uniformed staff. Guides are local men who work the site and know where the water is deep enough. That is the appeal and it is also the thing to be clear-eyed about: your safety here rests on a guide’s judgement and your own, not on a system.

The published opening hours are Sunday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, and the site’s own ticket page lists prices starting at US$6.50 with a guided experience included. That is the gate rate for someone who arrives under their own steam. It is not what a tour from Montego Bay costs, and the gap between the two numbers is the whole subject of the next section.

What it costs from Montego Bay, and why

Montego Bay is on the wrong side of the island for this. Ocho Rios is 105 kilometres away, an hour and a half to two hours each way on the north coast highway. Every price below is mostly road.

Private Dunn’s River Falls and Blue Hole tour – €91.38, 5 to 6 hours, 4.9 stars from 15 reviews. Cheaper than both of the shared ones above, private, and shorter, because it does not bolt a beach club onto the end. For two or more people this is the one worth looking at first.

Blue Hole waterfall experience from Montego Bay – €133.25, 5 hours, 5 stars from 11 reviews. Blue Hole alone, no Dunn’s River.

Now the comparison that matters. From Ocho Rios itself, Blue Hole and Dunn’s River Falls is €74.81 for 4 hours 30, with 127 reviews at 4.7 stars – more reviews than any single Montego Bay departure to this site. And Blue Hole secret waterfall and highlight tour, also from Ocho Rios, is €52.72 for 2.5 hours, 4.7 stars from 27.

If you are staying in Montego Bay, those two are not directly bookable as your day – they start where you are not, which is also why neither of them appears on our own category pages. We looked both up on GetYourGuide for the comparison. But they tell you honestly what the waterfall is worth and what the minibus is worth, and that is useful before you agree to €139.71.

The jumps

This is what people come for and it deserves plain language. The ledges range from a step-in to a genuine drop, and a guide will tell you which pool takes which. Nobody has to jump; the pools are swimmable from the edge and the rope swing is optional too.

What goes wrong here goes wrong in the same two ways every time: jumping where you were not shown to jump, and jumping after drinking. Neither is a Jamaican problem. Both are avoidable by following the guide who does this every day.

Bring water shoes – the same pair you need for Dunn’s River Falls. The rock between the pools is wet limestone and there is scrambling. Leave your phone with somebody dry or accept that it is going in; guides will often carry a bag and film you, and a tip for that is normal.

Blue Hole or Dunn’s River, if you only do one?

Dunn’s River if you want the famous one, the wide staircase, the chain of hands, the photograph everybody recognises. It is bigger, more organised, and much busier.

Blue Hole if you want water you swim in rather than climb, fewer people, and a site that feels like somewhere locals go. It is smaller and rougher and the better afternoon of the two, as long as you are comfortable with the informality.

The combination trips do both in a day, which works but means two hours of driving bracketing four hours of walking around wet. With children under about eight, pick one. The reasoning is in Montego Bay with kids.
