Bob Marley's Nine Mile from Montego Bay: The Drive, the Rules and Whether It Is Worth It

Nine Mile is a village in the hills of St. Ann parish, at around 3,000 feet, where Bob Marley was born and where he is buried. It is not near Montego Bay. Operators put the drive at roughly an hour and a half to two hours each way, on mountain roads that reviewers on one of these tours describe, in their own words, as “a bumpy ride”.

That is the whole decision. Everything else on this page follows from it.

What the ticket costs and what the tour costs

Admission at the gate is around US$30 for adults, and the operators quote child rates that do not agree with each other — under-sevens free at one, US$15 to US$20 at others — so confirm it for your own children rather than budgeting from this page. The price includes the guided walk around the site — the guides there are part of the ticket, not an extra.

The tours from Montego Bay are a different order of magnitude:

Note what that ladder does not do: it does not get better as it gets dearer. The best-rated Montego Bay departure with more than twenty reviews is the €146.00 one, and it is also the shortest at five hours. The €220.70 version costs three-quarters more than the €127.41 version for the same seven hours and rates lower on top of it, 3.9 against 4.2.

So you are not buying access. You are buying a seat in a minibus for three to four hours, a driver who knows the road, and someone else doing the thinking. Whether that is worth roughly €100 on top of a US$30 ticket depends entirely on the next section.

What is actually at Nine Mile

The site is small and it is a shrine, not a museum complex. The €127.41 listing spells out what is covered: Nine Mile admission, entrance fees and local taxes, the childhood home, Mt. Zion, the Ethiopian church, time at the mausoleum and at the gift shop. Gratuities, food and drinks, and souvenir photos are all stated as not included.

Inside the one-room house is the single bed Marley slept in as a boy and the stone he used as a pillow, which turns up later in the lyrics. Mount Zion Rock is the outcrop above the house where he sat; it is painted now. The mausoleum holds Marley and his mother Cedella. There is a memorabilia room, a gift shop, and food and drink for sale on site.

Two rules nobody puts in the booking confirmation. You take your shoes off to enter the mausoleum — wear something you can slip off and on standing up, not laced boots. And photography is not allowed inside the house or inside the mausoleum. Outdoors, in the village and on the grounds, cameras are fine. People arrive expecting to photograph the tomb and are surprised, and it reads badly when the surprise happens at the door.

The honest case against going

It is a long way to see a small place. Six to seven hours of your day for perhaps ninety minutes on site, and the part in between is a van on a winding road. If anyone in your group gets carsick, this is the trip that finds out.

The €127.41 tour also states it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users, and the terrain is the reason: the house and the mausoleum sit above the car park and you walk up to them.

And it is a pilgrimage. If reggae is not the reason you came to Jamaica, the honest answer is that you will have spent a day getting to a hillside village to look at a gravestone. There is no shame in that being the wrong day for you. Plenty of people find the drive itself — the interior, the small farms, the road climbing out of the coastal heat — is the best part, but that is a different reason to go and worth being clear about in advance.

Where the combination tours fit

Nine hours is a very long day, and you are climbing a waterfall and visiting a grave in the same one. But the arithmetic is hard to argue with: it costs €3.51 more than the cheapest Nine Mile-only tour and adds the island’s most famous waterfall. If you were going to do both anyway, and you are physically up for it, this is the version that makes the drive pay.

If you were not going to do both, do not let the value talk you into it. A rushed hour at Dunn’s River Falls is worse than no Dunn’s River Falls, and the same is true here.

Practical notes worth confirming

Pickup on the €127.41 tour begins around 8am and varies by hotel; the operator asks to be contacted 24 hours ahead to confirm the pickup point, and there is a minimum-traveller requirement, so a booking can be refunded if too few people join. The €146.00 version runs rain or shine and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, the driver-guide, the air-conditioned van and the entry fee; food and drink are not included.

Take cash in small notes. The gift shop, the food stand and the tips all want it, and the site is a long way from anything resembling a bank.

Booking it

If Bob Marley is the reason, book the €127.41 seven-hour version: it is the cheapest, it states plainly what it includes and excludes, and it gives you enough time on site that the drive was not the point of the day.

If you would rather have the falls and the grave in one go and you have a full day in you, the €130.92 combination is the better use of the road.
